Emergency rooms often lack adequate staffing to efficiently treat patients presenting with mental health-related issues. The prolonged boarding times that result in EDs can not only be financially costly to hospitals and increase staff’s stress, but also exacerbate patients’ conditions, lead to misdiagnosis, and increase the likelihood of unnecessary admission.
Telepsychiatry allows hospitals to extend their reach to patients located throughout a much larger geographical region. By using telepsychiatry, hospitals can access specialized providers who virtually deliver treatment to underserved patient
populations where need is high and access is low. Additionally, clinical efficiency can improve and patient wait times decrease.
